Our guesthouse is situated In Widenham, Umkomaas on the KwaZulu Natal South coast just 48 kilometres from central Durban and just north of the southern boundary of the eThekwini (Durban) region. The town originally known as South Barrow was formed in 1862 when a harbour was built here for the export of sugar. With the successful dredging of the sandbar of Durban harbour and the introduction of the railway, the harbour became obsolete but the town remained ,the town derived its name from the uMkomazi river. In the past the estuary of the river was used by large numbers of whales as a nursery giving birth in the shallows hence the name uMkomazi which in Zulu means Place of Cow Whales.
Today, with the world renowned Aliwal Shoal Marine protected area just in front of the town, it has become one of South Africa’s premier scuba dive destinations. A major attraction occurring most years is the Sardine Run. The annual migration of sardines from the cold Cape waters to the warmer waters of KwaZulu-Natal
The house was built in the early nineteen fifty’s on a half hectare stand and enjoys a magnificent sea views and is just a short walk away from the secluded Widenham beach. During restoration we have endeavored to keep the old world charm but backing that up with modern amenities.
Unfortunately we can not accommodate your pets.
